One of four Connecticut institutions to be honored at the AASLH Conference this September, The John Brown Project sees continued momentum
TORRINGTON, Conn. - Hartok -- The American Association for State and Local History (AASLH) proudly announces that Culture 4 A Cause is the recipient of an Award of Excellence for The John Brown Project.
The AASLH Leadership in History Awards is the most prestigious recognition for achievement inpreserving and interpreting state and local history.
The John Brown Project, incubated through Culture 4 A Cause, was honored for the musical
documentary film (His Truth is Marching On), which traces American music history through a Civil War song about Torrington, Connecticut's John Brown. Showcasing dozens of Connecticut artists and cultural leaders, The John Brown Project set out to illuminate a historical figure who stood unequivocally for equality, truth, and fairness. This film clarifies John Brown's importance in American history and American music's history of diversity and inclusion.

"It is humbling to be recognized by professional historians for leadership in history through
media packages like this film, the explainer video, and the scholarly videos that the committee honored us for producing," reflected Dan Morrison, writer and director of the film. "This project has exceeded all hopes from when we launched it as a way to shine a light on our corner of Connecticut's thriving arts and culture infrastructure," continues Jacque Williams, executive director of Culture 4 A Cause, "It is a remarkable example of the collective community impact that art project can achieve."
This year, AASLH conferred 47 national awards honoring people, projects, exhibits, and
publications. The winners represent the best in the field and provide leadership for the future of state and local history. "The John Brown Project is honored and serious about its inclusion in the future of leadership." asserts Morrison, who directed recognition to the future. "If you liked the John Brown movie, you'll LOVE Pushing the Rock. The music is amazing."

excellence in the collection, preservation, and interpretation of state and local history throughout the United States. The AASLH Leadership in History Awards honor significant achievements in the field of state and local history and bring public recognition of the opportunities for small and large organizations, institutions, and programs to contribute in this arena.
